Although the Blu-ray versus HD-DVD format wars have yet to reach a conclusion, business users are likely to find the Blu-ray format more attractive due to its higher capacity: a single-layer Blu-ray disc stores 25GB, compared to 15GB for HD-DVD. The Super Multi Blue GBW-H10N internal Blu-ray disc rewriter from LG Electronics is a multi-format drive that will write Blu-ray discs at up to 4x (143.9Mbps) as well as writing and reading all of the DVD and CD formats. Dual format Blu-ray/HD-DVD drives may well appear in future, but the GBW-H10N is Blu-ray only.

A secure backup and file-sharing solution based on Windows Home Server (WHS) sounds an unlikely-sounding product for a small business to buy into, but HP's new StorageWorks X510 Data Vault range might change a few minds on that score.

If you need more storage for your business, then you should consider the elegant-looking StorPac 40 external disk subsystem. It's pitched as a low-cost RAID product for small or medium-sized enterprise (SME), although it's been marketed to the Mac market for a while.

Starting at $1,199.99 (~£815) for 4TB, the Seagate BlackArmor 440 is arguably the most affordable high-capacity, high-end NAS server. Our Editors' Choice winner, the Synology DS209+, comes with no storage and costs £339.95. Although it's designed for the business environment, the BlackArmor 440 is also well suited for the home, provided you have enough networking knowledge (this device is not the easiest NAS to set up and manage).

Many computer users, especially those who travel for business, rely on notebooks and handhelds because they are small and portable. Unfortunately, these devices — and the data stored on them — are easily lost or stolen. In fact, the data is often more valuable than the portable device itself. We've all read about lost or stolen notebooks containing confidential or sensitive information. Even if your portable device doesn't contain any customer data, think of the other information that could be at risk: passwords, emails, contacts and so on.

It's hard to fault the Drobo B800i, which combines good looks, performance and functionality with ease of use. It's not cheap, but for the money it's one of the best small-business iSCSI appliances you can buy.

Iomega, now owned by storage market leader EMC, has launched the StorCenter ix4-200d, a four-spindle, network-attached storage (NAS) device aimed at small businesses, distributed offices and home office networks. The company reckons that it fills the gap between the bottom of EMC's enterprise range and the top of Iomega's small business series of products because its adds data protection and a suite of other features to the basic storage function.

As a small business grows the need for additional data storage grows with it. One of the most cost effective ways to add storage capacity is with a Storage Area Network (SAN) server. If your business has reached the point where SAN capacity is vital to continued operations, then perhaps it is time to consider the Drobo B800i.

The ReadyNAS NVX is the latest in a line of similar units from Netgear, aimed at home and small business use. The ReadyNAS NVX takes up to four Serial ATA drives in a number of configurations, and supports most common file serving protocols as well as several streaming media protocols. We reviewed the ReadyNAS NV+ around a year ago and were impressed with it, and this new unit continues that trend.
