How to cure aging: One drug can extend life span

By | July 7, 2011, 9:44 AM PDT

Scientists believe they’ve found a drug that can slow down premature aging in mice and could one day be used to extend human life. This is the story of a drug called rapamycin, nicknamed the forever young drug. The key chemical in this drug was discovered in the soil on the famed, remote Easter Island, reports Technology Review.

Previously, the drug’s wonderful fountain of youth effects were seen in only in invertebrates such as fruit flies, yeast and nematode worms, where it helped cells manufacture new proteins and kept bad cells at bay. But now, the scientists are seeing that it has similar effects on the aging process in mammals.

In the study published in Nature, scientists show that when rapamycin is administered to mice as a food supplement, it expands their life span. Now in human years, that would translate to an extra decade of a healthy living. The work was the result of three separate studies conducted at a number of institutions including Jackson Laboratory. The independent groups reported their results to the National Institute of Aging’s Interventions Testing Program, which aims to investigate which drugs might slow down aging in mice.

According to Technology Review:

“People who study the biology of aging feel that in order to deal with diseases of aging, it’s much more efficient to target underlying mechanisms, rather than focusing on heart disease or cancer or diabetes or Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s separately,” says David Harrison, a researcher at Jackson Laboratory. “If we could alter underlying mechanisms of aging, all of these things would be postponed.”

The researchers think that the drug could target the same pathway that occurs when the body is put under a calorie restriction diet, a technique used for extending life. Calorie restriction dates back to 1934, after it became known that cutting calories extended the lifespan of rats.

However, it is not known just how effective this drug would be in humans, considering its known side effects of pneumonia and fungal infections. Still, scientists are more hopeful that it could be used to keep old age diseases under control. It could buy more time by simply slowing the progression of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and diabetes, resulting in a longer, healthy life span for humans the way it did in mice.

The wonder drug was previously used in children with the condition called Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, a rare condition that makes kids die of old age by the time they are only 12 years old. The condition is caused by a build up of protein in cells in the body. The drug cleans the cells of this toxic protein, and has been approved by the FDA. It’s used to suppress the immune system in patients who just had organ transplants.

Scientists will need to figure how to get around of some of the drug’s side effects like pneumonia, before other applications of this anti-aging drug has legs. It’s not like healthy people who want to live forever will be taking this regularly.

On a fundamental level, the drug gets rid of the junk that harms cells. The drug cleans out the waste from cells and organs, Dimitri Krainc, told The Telegraph. Using it to get the waste management system into gear would extend the life of our cells and organs, and keep us healthier as a result.

The famous gerontologist Aubrey de Grey thinks we can actually “cure” aging by preventing molecular and cellular damage before it spins out of control. De Grey tells Reuters that, ““if we could do that in the case of certain modified forms of cholesterol which accumulate in cells of the artery wall, then we simply would not get cardiovascular disease.” In other words, try to stop cellular damage before it becomes pathogenic and we can live for a long time.

De Grey is featured in an upcoming documentary, named How to Live Forever. The trailer looks pretty good. I’m looking forward to seeing a screening of it this weekend. Leave me a comment if you want me to ask De Grey any questions:

Living longer
Ironic it was found on Easter Island, where civilization perished as a result of consuming all of the available natural resources, leaving a barren landscape and stone idols. No point living longer if the environs are not fit to live in...

As well as finishing off Social Security and Medicare.
We just can't afford having too many people live into their 90s.

Living longer
I once saw a movie where people walked shoulder to shoulder and once you reached a certain age those people would be called in. guess for what? That is what we are looking for in the future. Our planet is getting to small,People. We should look at less growth.

"...an extra decade of a healthy living"
Now that may be worth having. (Let's leave the socio-economic debate out of this.)

Living longer is one thing. Having an extra 10 healthy years is another entirely.

living ten health years longer
may help. as you can look back of some people living in the early 1800's who lived even then to 90 years of age. as their age was put on the grave stone. when they had passed away. I think life is more important it is we must have to find away not to populate not making to many babies in those who lives in third world countries..

Enjoy it while you have it
To go to all that trouble to die of Athlete's Foot?
However, it is not known just how effective this drug would be in humans, considering its known side effects of pneumonia and fungal infections.

This looks like Big-Pharma trying to extend the life of another failed product

You could be trying to walk down the street on your low cal diet, trying to remember when it's time to take your next pill, and be crushed be a busrned out corporate liar on a high speed rendezvous with the pavement

You'd have been safe if you'd popped into the pub

Pass the ashtray please

Very interesting
It's very interested at the very least. And who would have known that the soil of a rather small remote island would have some secrets.

Help with Retinal disease
I am a 52 year old male that has suffered from stargaurdts disease for about 40 years. It is a genetic disease that effects the retina and prohibits the retina from properly disposing of protein molecules which then in return leads to a toxic buildup that then kills the R.P.E. cells and damages rods and cones. Eventually leaving one blind. Do you think this drug could offer some potential help in slowing down this process?

Rapamycin not a failed drug
Rapamycin is in use in many different transplant scenarios, including pancreatic islet transplant for kids with Type I diabetes. The side effects there are manageable. Question is what kind of dosages are required to have any significant anti-aging effects? Those who make fun of such research probably haven't had a close family member slowly waste away from dementia.

Miracle Drug
Outliving one's income and wealth is a true problem for a large percentage of people, if not the majority of people. Plus, I am not sure it is worth living too long as a very old person.

At what age is it practical?
My question is "At what age does this make sense to begin a regimen of treatment?" if it doesn't help someone over 30, 40 or 50, does it make sense to use it at all? I would certainly like to extend my useful working / exploring years. At 48, I feel like I am JUST getting it figured out. Now, my body parts are beginning to fail me.

@robslusher
Join Life Extension Foundation, get their very inclusive blood panel test, call their doc (an M.D.), and get his/her personalized recommendations based on the blood test results. www.lef.org The sooner you get onboard the sooner you can gain control of aging. The first year is $45 and that gets you $95 worth of their supplements, a weekly magazine and telephone support for a year. Really is a no-brainer. LEF emphasizes the drug free approach to health and longevity.

Questions to be answered
1) Does it work the same (adds equal # of years to all who use it) or proportionally (assuming a person lives to 80; does it add 20 years to a 20 year old, only 10 years to a 40 year old and only 5 years to a 60 year old, for example)?

2) Do dosages increase its effects or even, as is true of many drugs, work the opposite way?

3) Does it work the same way or differently for different gene types?

4) Are there other drugs that can magnify or neutralize its effects?

5) Would it need to be takely hourly, daily, weekly?

6) How expensive would it be?

7) Would it affect the intelligence or memory of those using it?

I look forward to seeing these questions answered.

Global Conscience
If man does not begin to understand that the resources on my surface are finite he will learn the same lesson that the people of Easter Island learned. 7 Billion mouths to feed and you want them to live longer. Clean water is becoming scarcer and less food is grown. Medical research to improve quality of life is magnanimous but research to extend life when there is no valid reason to do so is inane.
Live life. Do not postpone doing anything. Eat healthy and stay active.

yes as I been reading peoples comments here I feel you have a good positive way of looking at life. and I agree with you here life is precious. as I mention about my wife now she has 2springs now to keep her valve open and a new kind of Coagulant just came out sixty days ago she is not able to take the other coagulant that thins her blood out. the other drug that was prescribed to her because of her veins in her arms being to small. she has to take 9 prescriptions now since she had came down with heart disease last Wendsday .where I live in Quebec. the government will pay 500 dollars a month she will only pay 75 dollars.
she was in a university where they do research on heart disease. where she admitted to Sherbrooke Quebec Canada. I feel any form of drug is important with out this new Drug they would have to try some thing with the other drug if this new form of drug did not come out. she ha s 10 black and blue spots where-they tried to take blood out for the other medication before they give this one to her. you can email me at peaceoutreach.ca@gmail.com

Comprehension
How many people read these reports before writing silly comments? The main thrust of the discussion is that this treatment could improve quality of life. Perhaps though, increase in life span could give some respondents the opportunity to learn the basics of grammar......or perhaps not.

We Also Need Population Control
No discussion of extending the length of human life is legimate without discussing population growth. Even without life extension, all of our environmental, social and political problems would be solved if human beings were more responsible about their procreation.

Social Security and Medicaire
Both SS and medicaire will be dead or gutted, regardless of whether people routinely live into their 90's.

In the 50's and 60's their were ~100 people working for the 20 or 30 people getting benefits. With the massive changes in lifestyle, career length etc, its ~1-1 right now.

Its in essence a giant ponsy scheme thats just about run its course. Look for announcements soon, that the government will try to honor the commitment made to those already retired and dependent on the income, but people in their 30's and 40's need to begin making other plans.

Its that or Soylent green

Of course, when Social Security was conceived...
...very few people lived long enough to collect from it. The only way to make Social Security viable again to to raise the retirement age back up to at least the median life expectancy age. Of course, this is politically impossible, which is Social Security's greatest flaw.

Another thought
How about removing the cap for SS taxes? That combined with the admission that it is welfare for the elderly would make it solvent overnight!

It has always been a prediction of mine...
...that sooner or later the government would have to give up on the lie they've been telling us for generations, and convert Social Security into just another means-tested welfare program. You won't get to collect from it until you're broke, and even then it won't pay enough for you to live in mere poverty. The other difference between it and other government welfare, is that there will be a line item for it on your tax return.

Personally, I assume that I will never collect on the +15% that has been taken from me for my supposed "supplemental retirement".

Who wants to live forever...
Highlander, anyone? My first thought was connecting excess (longevity) to Easter Island's demise as per Collapse. I like the idea of more life, but should we simultaneously ask how much is too much if quality of life isn't maintained and if the planet's resources are irrevocably diminished?

This makes me more optimistic.
I have been researching anti-aging and reverse-aging strategies heavily for the last couple of months. I'm glad to see some new information in this article. I'm hoping so much that we can control the aging process in the very near future. I think that if we, as a society, push for this kind of research, we will have it. happy The science exists. It is possible. It's just a matter of finding out how.

I'm actually surprised the "telomere" didn't come up in this conversation.

If we control aging, chronological age and biological age will no longer go hand-in-hand. We can work for as long as we want, and live in comfort (and youth) with our loved ones for a very long time. That's why I volunteer my time and efforts in helping these companies that research this wonderful thing. I encourage others to do it too. Come on, scientists. Let's find a solution! Soon! happy

Also, people, spread the word that age management is possible, and that it is within our reach. Let's create public awareness and make this a reality!

Furthermore, I wholeheartedly believe David Harrison's quote. It's important to keep up the research on the illnesses so we can control them and understand them, but it's so much more critical to tackle the root of the problem.

???People who study the biology of aging feel that in order to deal with diseases of aging, it???s much more efficient to target underlying mechanisms, rather than focusing on heart disease or cancer or diabetes or Alzheimer???s or Parkinson???s separately,??? says David Harrison, a researcher at Jackson Laboratory. ???If we could alter underlying mechanisms of aging, all of these things would be postponed.???
