What a smart grid can do for you
August 10, 2009 | Length: 00:02:04
When's the best time to run the dishwasher or do your laundry? With traditional power grids consumers can never be sure, but a smart grid can answer that question and more. SmartPlanet correspondent Sumi Das talks to Silver Spring Networks CTO Raj Vaswani about the benefits of a networked system, starting with a less expensive electricity bill.

Just like our Government at work!
All this technology will make them a fortune in labor savings, vehicle savings, etc. Now that I am on a fixed income, my America is falling apart. Not to get into politics, but something has to be done. I can't afford anymore savings.

Why?
Nothing but add cost!
Here's the thing. If alternative energy is so viable then we don't need a smart or dumb grid. Local or residential generation would be more cost effective and solves a national power dsitribution and power security issues at the same time.

I used have a time-of-meter that, I assume, measured how much electricity was being used on an hourly basis. The utility told me ahead of time what the price will be for different times of day and I adjusted my behavior accordingly. I also allowed them to control my air conditioner when necessary. Other than moving optional appliance usage to nights and weekends, when electricity was cheapest, nothing else changed. I used my air conditioner when it was hot, my heat pump when it was cold and my oven when I was hungry. I did try to plan to do things on weekends, but there is only so much you can change.

>> Sumi: In many ways the energy industry has changed very little in the past 100 years. Communication of information between the consumer and the utility company remains a one-way street. But the evolution of the smart grid is poised to change that. Joining me now is CTO of Silver Spring Networks, Raj Vaswani. Raj, thanks for joining me.
>> Raj: Thanks for having me.
>> Sumi: So tell us how the work that your company is doing is looking to change that old model.
>> Raj: So at Silver Spring Networks we build communications technology and software for the soft grid. The communications technology is a wireless card that looks like this and goes inside of electric meters or other devices on the grid, like transformers or capacitor banks. What it does is allows utilities to connect much more directly with their consumers and to manage the grid better. The analogy is today, as a consumer, the way you pay for electricity is that it's as if you went to gas station, you filled up your car, and you got a bill 30 days later. You have no visibility into what you are paying at the time. What the smart grid will do for you is allow you to get that visibility.
>> Sumi: So your company is helping to establish a network for the smart grid. What benefits does that provide both the consumer as well as the utility company?
>> Raj: What the smart grid will do for you is allow the consumer to understand when electricity is expensive, what they can do to manage that. And for example, program their dishwasher or the washing machine to actually operate when electricity is cheapest.
>> Sumi: Right now it's a mystery.
>> Raj: It's a complete mystery. And so not only can we use electricity more efficiently, but we can also save consumers money.
>> Sumi: So if I signed up, when will this be available to me as a consumer?
>> Raj: Well in many cases right now. It's actually rolling out across the country, and in fact across the world as we speak, at a rate of thousands of devices per day. So depending on where you live, stay tuned, it's coming to you any minute.
>> Sumi: Raj, thank you so much for sharing your vision of what the smart grid will enable us to do.
>> Raj: My pleasure.
>> I'm Sumi Das, phonetic Thanks for watching.
