The next big thing in retail?

May 18, 2010  |  Length: 00:02:18

Intel has developed a proof-of-concept shopping display that uses transparent touch screen technologies and a holographic glass screen. Shoppers can make purchases virtually while in the store. The kiosk is smart enough to analyze physical attributes such as height and gender and then offer clothing recommendations. SmartPlanet correspondent Sumi Das tests it out.

RE: The next big thing in retail?
Great, can you add in

1) colour - where are the BLACK jeans, size 12
2) What will suite me? to offer examples of current Jeans (style, size, colour) likely to suite your shape and hight (pear, hour glass etc)

If you like this and use it could you send me an acknowledgment, I am building a portfolio of successfull business improvement ideas. Regards, student Sarah Croft sasscy1@googlemail.com

Level-up
Do this in the store, but also do the same on the mall-scale,
allowing shops to subscribe and place their offerings on the mall
guide, enabling a shopper to target their shopping efforts more
efficiently by selecting what they want to get, when entering the
mall, with the system showing which shops provide the buyer's
desired items, including brands, gender, sizes (ie do they handle
extreme sizes or normal sizes), availability in the buyer's size,
color preference, style preference), repeat shopper
identification and personal profile to save their preferences, etc.
Show the buyer any specials from each of their preferred shops,
brands, items, etc.

On the store level, add a shopping list archive so the user can
repeat purchases or select items from their list(s) to make a
purchase. This is very handy for groceries, which for most
people consist largely of repeat items. It also helps remind one
of things they might not have remembered to buy otherwise.
Integrate this with the register database, so buying decisions
can be also added to their lists, even if they weren't selected
through the shopping guide.

RE: The next big thing in retail?
This seems like nothing more than a virtual catalog. some things look great on the hanger, and terrible on. 3 identical pair of pants can each fit differently. And some of us are in between sizes: sometimes the 6 fits better than an 8. We need body scans to go with the shopping. It was done ages ago for trying different hair colors/styles.

>> Sumi Das: This digital display just might be the next big thing in retail.

>> We're hoping this is going to transform the retail shopping experience for the consumer.

>> Sumi Das: Chip maker Intel has developed a proof of concept which uses transparent touch-screen technologies and a holographic glass screen that allows you to shop from a virtual sign while in the store. Ed Stock is the designer of the system.

>> The idea is to help the shoppers' shopping experience. When they walk into a store, they see this massive store. And most people don't really like to spend a lot of time doing the hunting and shopping and looking all over the place trying to find what they want. They want to get in and out.

>> Sumi Das: Instead, you can shop right from this sign and then access a digital floor plan to help you retrieve the item you're looking for. And the sign is also smart enough to analyze some physical attributes about who you are. As I walk up to the digital sign, technology working in the background uses anonymous video analytics to determine my height and also my gender. From there the intelligent display will figure out what products might be a good fit.

>> We've got belts. We've got shirts. Here is a dress shirt. It shows you the dress shirt here and all available products for a woman.

>> Sumi Das: The sign also features augmented reality: a new technology that combines the virtual world with the real world.

>> The idea of augmented reality is the glass here allows us to give the option to see through it but augment that reality with tool tips showing us - you know - the dress shirts are here; this winter jacket is here, another dress shirt. And the table with the jeans, if you look back through the glass you can see the wooden table with the jeans all piled up on there.

>> Sumi Das: Once you find what you want, you can pick out the product from the touch screen, transfer it to your mobile phone and it will be waiting at the register for pick up.

>> The idea was with this proof of concept is to come up with a design that is 3 to 5 years out of what we'll see in the retail space but is doable with today's technology. So we think this is the future and we're just trying to get people to think out of the box of what they can do.

>> Sumi Das: The changing face of retail: more interactive and personal. For Smart Planet, I'm Sumi Das.
