Solar plane takes first 24-hour flight
July 9, 2010 | Length: 00:01:31
A solar-powered plane has succeeded in its first attempt at a 24-hour voyage. Taking off from Switzerland, the Solar Impulse HB-SIA hit the skies on Wednesday powered only by the sun's energy. SmartPlanet shows you raw footage of the experimental plane in flight.

RE: First solar plane takes flight
First solar powered plane? The headline is a bit presumptive, isn't it? What about NASA's Helios? It certainly was solar-powered and it certainly flew.

RE: First solar plane takes flight
I do like the "first" solar plane idea. I see the idea as a commuter plane outlet, however, the power of lift and solar power seem to be blocking the idea of jet lift. Is it possible for solar to lift Cessna's, and Jet's in the future? How will you be able to access that much energy from the Sun, or will you have to contain the power of the sun with continuous absorption. By doing so, the plane would need to absorb solar power, even in the dark, since the Sun is just on the other side of the planet, therefore, technically still there. This would include any given cloudy situation.
Keep up the good work!
