>> Sumi Das: Hello everyone, and welcome to Sumi's smart picks. I'm Sumi Das, and each week I'll tell you about a clever product that in one way or another helps us live cleaner, greener lives. My pick this week in honor of Valentine's Day, organic flowers. These lovely roses and lilies are from organicbouquet.com. Their flowers are not only grown sustainably, but the company also partners with farms that pay fair wages, and offer healthcare, childcare, and education benefits that exceed minimum government mandates. Last year 2011, 196 million roses were produced for Valentine's Day. Many flowers sold in the US are grown in Columbia and Ecuador, in other words, warmer countries where bugs thrive. So a lot of pesticides are used during farming. And while the US Department of Agriculture checks imported flowers for insects, it doesn't test flowers for chemicals and toxins. And let's not forget the farm workers who are more directly exposed to these harmful chemicals. Pesticide exposure related ailments include conjunctivitis, birth defects, reproductive problems, and neurological disease. So here's the question. What's the first thing you do when a dozen red roses like this show up on your doorstep? You bury your nose in them, and breathe in. Would you rather be sniffing a pesticide-free organic bouquet, or a non-organic bouquet that most likely has traces of chemicals? Just saying. Organicbouquet.com has plenty to choose from -- roses in all colors, daisies, tulips, as well as plants and wreaths. So that's my pick for this week -- flowers from organicbouquet.com. Check back next week for more.
