New exercise technology designed for athletes increases production of 'HGH'

At NASA Ames Research Park, scientist Peter Wasowski has developed an alternative exercise machine called Vasper. The user wears compression cuffs on the arms and legs and core-cooling panels on the chest and head. During exercise, the machine traps large amounts of lactic acid in the body, stimulating the pituitary gland and producing more HGH or human growth hormone.

Is that safe?
Isn't lactic acid what causes muscle "burn" and muscle cell breakdown and the next day's sore muscles? (these are all rhetorical Q's...) is this arcipe for masochists or is there a true advantage?

If it is trapping the lactic acid, shouldn't that prevent teh problems you mention, atleast until it is released?

Wow. Just wow. This reminds me of Rocky IV... Ivan Drago with all of his technical training methods... does this substitute for hard work. No. There are so many things flawed here. If the purpose of this was to get "fit" (ie - adaptation for functional activities) then there is no specifity in relation to movement patterns or components of fitness. By doing this you could become really awesome at riding a recumbent bicycle, but there would be close to zero application to running, jumping, throwing, swimming, lifting, carrying or climbing. Not to mention activities in the power output range of the work spectrum. Swimmers are good at swimming. Awesome. What relevance does that have to this anyway? Putting a several hour workout into 20 minutes? HGH peaks after 40 minutes, then declines. Anyone who has done physiology 101 would now not to train that long if they were after growth. If they were after endurance, then anyone who has done any sport, at all, would know that favourable adaptations are not just about "how much lactic acid can I accumulate in the cold", but also developing the skill of the movement through repetition, conditioning other elements (eg - feet through loading), and the psychological component of knowing that "yes, I can run x miles".

This video made me want to run in front of a car, jump off a building, drop a barbell on my little toe, cycle at full speed into a brick wall, then hang myself with my skipping rope. I reckon I probably would have gotten fitter by doing this and being dead then five years training with this nonsense. Cheaper too.

Space Adaptation
I would surmise this technology was developed in response to challenges encountered in weightlessness (muscle & bone loss.) In space you have to train quite a bit longer to forestall these effects; given the rigid & demanding schedule of astronauts, figuring out a way to halve your workout would have very real benefits.

Stroke rehabilitation
Could this be invaluable in rehabilitation of strokes? Almost 3 years ago, I had a massive hemorrhagic stroke, and anything which would enhance stroke recovery would be invaluable. Strokes are THE leading cause of disability in the world.

Depends on your current level of function: this could assist in developing capacity, but not function... But seriously an advanced method like this is like focusing on condiments, without having even cooked the main course.

Hard to speculate without knowing the extent of dysfunction post CVA or areas of brain affected, but I can 100% say you would get much better returns by having an appropriate neurological assessment by a suitably experienced physical therapist, a functional training program developed, re-evaluated, and reviewed on an ongoing basis.

This machine will make you good at riding a recumbent bike, but not a real one, and do zip for balance

Now we can accumulate enough lactic acid to be utterly sore far longer following a workout. Which if you think about it is quite 'hip' and 'post modern'... 'feeling the burn', is the status symbol desk jockies crave.

Pause Whenever we see young children moving around space, somebody who is 5-6-7-8 years old, we hardly ever see them walking. They're always going full speed ahead. And if you were to look inside their muscle tissue, you would see a tremendous amount of lactic acid building up as they're using up their muscles. And there is a very direct feedback from a muscle loaded with lactic acid to the brain requesting the brain to release huge amounts of growth hormone to rebuild the muscle to pre-exercise condition. Every 10 years after puberty, we lose 14% of that signal simply because we don't exercise at that same intensity. So Vasper Technology is basically designed to trap huge amounts of lactic acid and to stimulate the pituitary gland to produce your own increased secretions of human growth hormone.

Pause The user wears comparison cuffs on arms and legs as well as core cooling panels on the chest and on the head. We basically see the chest as the 60% of the circulation and the head as the 40%, so as long as we cool those two areas, we can actually drop the core body temperature.

So this could be compared to swimming in cool water except you're out of water and you're vertical. We work a lot with professional athletes. We basically give you a two and a half hour exercise protocol in twenty minutes by core cooling the body so you produce much more lactic acid. I believe this is definitely the future of exercise.
