NASA engineers test wheels on new Mars Rover

The next Mars Rover,'Curiosity', just got one step closer to touching down on the red planet in 2012. The Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory have installed all six wheels and started the motor to get the wheels in rotation. as a retired LM engineer, I like the wide tread tires with a decent surface tread. I do not like the open sides which will allow sand/small rocks to move inside the wheel and potrentially overload the drive motor as is the current case. A lightweight aluminum alloy outer cap could prevent this and give a little extra protection to wheel beartings and hubs. it cound be made slightly concave to prevent sideswipe collisions with suroundings..
