LED light bulbs, just how efficient are they?

January 11, 2012  |  Length: 00:01:59

Thinking of making the switch from energy-intensive incandescent bulbs, but can't stand the infamously cold and harsh light quality? SmartPlanet's Sumi Das rounds up some bulbs that will have you warming up to LEDs.

LED light bulbs - color properties misrepresented
The lens color of an LED lamp (or light bulb) when turned off has nothing to do with the color qualities of the light produced by that source when energized.

Packaging of many LED lamps now include the Lighting Facts label to help guide consumer selection. The following website provides a good overview of the information included on the label: http://www.lightingfacts.com/default.aspx?cp=content/label

Two characteristics, "Color Accuracy" and "Light Color", are both important when selecting an LED lamp:

Color Accuracy is a measure of how naturally/accurately each lamp renders the color(s) of objects; Color Rendering Index (CRI) is the current standard used by the lighting industry and every source is rated on this 0-100 scale. The higher the CRI, the more naturally/accurately that lamp render object colors. Consumers looking to replace incandescent or halogen bulbs (CRI ~95-100) should be most pleased with LED (or CFL) products with CRI of 85+.

Light Color is the apparent warmth or coolness (Correlated Color Temperature (CCT), measured in degrees Kelvin) of the source itself. Consumers looking to replace incandescent or halogen bulbs should be most pleased with LED (or CFL) products with warm color temperature (CCT less than 3000K).

LED lights
The title said LED's "How efficient are they?" It never answered that question. How many watts per lumen are they?? For a website that purports to be "smart" Your science is often shallow and superficial. I have converted all of the interior lighting in my motorhome to LED's in order to extend battery life when camping (at considerable expense). I haven't measured their amperage draw though, Was hoping this article would give some specifics, but was disappointed that it didn't.

It's always great to see Sumi, but...
The original question was never answered. Moreover, Sumi fails to address other major shortcomings behind LED's, namely the possible biological effects (the blue-white light affects melatonin production) and the lack of recourse when these bulbs don't live up to the stated longevity. In fact, had she addressed these and other issues, the segment would have been much longer and the viewers would have been treated to more of Sumi!

Varicose veins on chest
Is that some kind of strange top, or does Sumi have varicose veins on her chest? Look closely.

Color Accuracy is a Birthday Messages measure of how naturally/accurately each lamp renders the color the lack of recourse when these bulbs Good Night Messages don't live up to the stated longevity. In fact, had she addressed these Good Morning Messages and other issues, the segment would have been free online messages much longer and the viewers would have been mothers day messages treated to more of Sumi.
