Iron Man robot suit gives soldiers super-human ability

September 29, 2010  |  Length: 00:01:03

Raytheon recently demonstrated its next-generation exoskeleton robot suit for military personnel. Using a high-pressure hydraulics system and a mix of sensors and actuators, the new suit aids a solider with heavy lifting, giving a person the ability to carry 200 pounds many times over without getting tired. SmartPlanet shows you raw footage of the new wearable robot suit in action.

RE: Iron Man robot suit gives soldiers super-human ability
Japanese company Cyberdine built one a while ago. I'm not sure if it's stronger, but it's certainly better designed--as in, it's lighter, smaller and still powerful. I'm not sure about the power supply though.

Halo fans rejoyce!
Just need a good portable power supply. Looks like spartian MJOLNIR armor isn't too far away. Here's hope'n.

Just what a soldier needs. Another critical component dependant on the Energizer bunny. What we need to run this is first use a power technology that is quickly renewable, like a fuel cell.

Wrong Movie
This is the loader from Aliens, not an Iron Man suit. But still cool.

Actually, this is the powered armor that Verhoeven couldn't afford to include in Starship Troopers. With or without jet packs. Way cool but limited usefulness to the military without big time advances in power supply. Even then, you'll stll need wheels, tracks or rotors to get from place to place.

Having a hard time being impressed by this just going by the video. Pulling down 200lbs? That's a pull-up or chin-up for most military men. Breaking boards? They broke with the grain; any novice martial artist can do that, and most have. I don't know how much one of those missles weighs, but that seems like a lot of money to have spent to do something we can already do.

As long as you need to be hooked up to an external source, its not going to have much more than limited usage. Calling it Iron Man is an insult on so many levels. They've had strength assisted things like this for years and I don't see much in the way of innovation or improvement with this demonstration, other than a bit more range of motion.

Looks like another huge waste of money. This is all too typical of the kind of useless crap DOD promotes.

OK. so this suit allows you to punch wood, life missiles and work out on a universal gym...big whoop! Anybody who competes in the Iron Man competition can do any of that *WITHOUT* a suit! I want to see it pick up a car and toss it! Or bend a crow-bar...and then pick up an egg! Or whoop a huge alien's @$$!

RE: Iron Man robot suit gives soldiers super-human ability
Again, the technology may be new but the concept is as old as
the first weapon of destruction, the bow and arrow. Try fighting a
war with software rather than hardware. The future wars will not
be about physical combat but about mind control-from diplomacy
to psycho-socio-politico warfare, the game of which will not be
about killing. There are ways to win wars without having to fight
even if the enemy is from the past. The days of Ghangis Khan
are still fresh in our guts when we devise such mindless
technology. In the "Art of War", the true skill is to win a war
without fighting. Sad to say, we have yet to emerge from those
barbaric times, depite our so called "first world" status.

Let's stop pushing this stuff into the military, and target it for the benefit of the majority of people.

Stick with building sophisticated robots. They have proven their worth in combat. Especially in working with bomb disposal units.
