Implantable artificial kidney may cure chronic kidney disease

December 6, 2010  |  Length: 00:02:56

About 85,000 people need kidney transplants each year, but fewer than 20,000 kidneys are available. To survive, people with chronic kidney disease must undergo dialysis for 4 hours at a time, multiple times each week. UCSF Professor of Bioengineering, Shuvo Roy, PhD, is leading a team of researchers to develop an implantable artificial kidney that could make dialysis a thing of the past.

Exremely important work
Its a shame that allot more funding is not going into this specific area - I believe we know of people with this problem and the billions of dollars going to dialysis while at the same time keep people from leaving a normal life due to the constraints.

RE: Implantable artificial kidney may cure chronic kidney disease
Can this technology be used to improve the filters that are already in use for dialysis?
What about erythropoeitin?

IS THIS ARTIFICIAL KIDNEY AVAILABLE NOW OR IS IT STILL UNDER RESEARCH? I HAVE KIDNEY FAILURE NOW AND IT SOUNDS LIKE WONDERFUL IDEA. HOW SOON WILL IT BE AVAILABLE? JOHN

RE: Implantable artificial kidney may cure chronic kidney disease
I have a kidney condition which may (or may not) lead to kidney failure. At the moment I am doing OK, but the prospect of the possibility of an artificial kidney in the (near?) future is certainly very exciting. I wish Prof Shuvo Roy and his team all possible success with their work, which can bring great benefit to so many.

An implantable dialysis machine may play a role in the short term,
but it's in a race against stem cell grown biological replacements -
which I suspect are more ideal in the long term.

Is it in the market but not approved yet?
I have seen two kidney prototypes and it seems that there are not approved yet. I would like to know if there are already clinics for artificial kedney transplants in Houston.

Implantable Artificial Kidney
This wrtificial implantable kidney would save Medicare a lot of money. After the initial cost of the implant, the artificial kidney will replace three times weekly dialysis. I would like to be the first candidate for receiving this new implantable artificial kidney.
