>> Checking into a hotel doesn't mean you have to check your green habits at the door. You can still recycle, reduce waste, and save energy and water while you're away from home. Here are some simple things you can do to green your hotel stay.

>> First, choose green accommodations. These are places that are working to make their operations more sustainable by reducing energy, waste, and consumption. Green hotels can be found on the Green Hotels Association website. Let the hotel know that it's not necessary to change your towels and sheets each day.

>> Many hotels have cards asking guests to consider using their linens more than once, conserving water and energy.

>> When you leave the room, turn off the lights and TV, and turn down the air conditioning or heat.

>> Leave a note for housekeeping asking them not to replace the mini bottles of shampoo and soap until they're empty. Or better yet, bring your own soap and shampoo in travel containers. Avoid using those wrapped plastic cups, especially if the hotel supplies glass ones in the room. And don't take the hotels pens, paper, and other freebies. Leave them for the next guest. Lastly, if you have the option, check out electronically through your hotel TV to reduce paper waste. Many hotels are taking steps to be more environmentally minded. Working together you can lighten the impact of your stay.
