Charging devices eliminate vampire power

April 19, 2012  |  Length: 00:01:45

We all know that leaving a device plugged in wastes significant amounts of electricity over time. But is anyone motivated enough to unplug all their gadgets and appliances while they're not in use? SmartPlanet's Sumi Das takes a look at a new product that stops the standby power problem.

Kindle case problem
Hi,Sumi. To solve the problem of removing your Kindle from the re-charger, stick a piece of flat ribbon to the middle of the case, then let it overhang at the top. Remember the battery remover ribbons in gadgets?

Prototype? Puleeeze!
What possible use is presenting a product that is not yet available. Please stop wasting our time and bandwidth. When the new charger is perfected and available for sale, THEN is the time to review it!

A better idea that I am sure will cost much less.
I have all of my chargers on switches.

This makes me laugh
First off, during GW's office time, he put in effect a ruling for device chargers such as phones to have a micro switch to shut things off, or as we were told. Many cell phone chargers are to have this system in place. Once fully charged, switches off until device calls for charge, this prevents it from doing a continuous charge, burning out the device or catching fire.

Apples and oranges
Phantom power to devices like TVs so that they start quickly are big power consumers. Phantom power to a plugged in phone is minuscule.

Chargers
Phone chargers aren't the major problems in our house we always unlug them when the phone is charged, I don't understand why they would be left plugges in,, in the first place. It is things like the computer speaker, the printer converter, the modem , and wireless router, the TV converter box (D to A) power trnasformers...Sure some TV's may consume "standby power", but I am not uplugging the TV and go through the setup each time! Same goes for the TV converter boxes. It also is too inconvenient to get on the floor and turn on/off the speaker power, etc. each time you need to. The power strips are on the floor behind the desk. Something that turns the power on when you turn on the unit's power switch is what's needed. Same goes for the phone charger.
I guess we need to install the whole house surge suppression devices and then what the computer's peripherals are plugged into doesn't matter and then the power strip can be mounted somewhere more convenient than the floor. Maybe a power strip mounted on the wall, like you would find in a hardware store for a workbench!

>> Hello and welcome to Sumi's Smart Picks. I'm Sumi Das and each week I'll tell you about a clever product that in one way or another helps us live cleaner, greener lives. My pick this week, the Mushroom GreenZero charger from Bracketron. This is the charger we've all been waiting for. When you're device is fully charged, the charger will turn off automatically. A typical charger continues to draw power. In other words, these GreenZero chargers solve the vampire power problem. If you don't think it's really a problem, consider this; vampire, or standby power, accounts for 10% of residential electricity use. Some estimates say that amounts to $3 billion, with a 'B', in the U.S. alone. If you can save a few hundred dollars on your utility bill every year, why not, right? Here's how it works. Plug the charger into a socket. We have it plugged into an extension cord here. And then connect your device. I have my phone...plug it in. When you're ready to start charging, push the green button right here and the device will start to charge. You can even push it with your foot if it's plugged into a low wall socket. Pretty simple. This version of the charger also has a cord keeper. Just wrap it around the button which is pretty convenient as well. Unfortunately, this is a prototype and it's been a bit buggy at times, but we trust that when the models go on sale, they'll work as promised. We'll let you know if they don't. That's my pick for this week; Bracketron's Mushroom GreenZero charger. Check back next week for more.
