Carnegie Mellon's flying robots could assist firefighters in search and rescue
May 26, 2011 | Length: 00:02:08
Pei Zhang, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, is working on a mobile-sensor network that could send swarms of tiny helicopters into a building. The robotic helicopters are equipped with radios, gyroscopes, and compasses, so they can sense each other and objects around them. While the project is still in the very early stages of research and development, Zhang hopes one day firefighters could use the robotic helicopters for search and rescue.

Great idea, but..
before developing it any further into a fire fighters assistant, don't forget to add some practical resistance into the equation: fires, and especially those in buildings, tend to bring not only some serious heat but quite often some strong and turbulent wind effects (drafts) due to it too...

It would work in turbulance
Suspect the on board flight control systems could handle turbulence better then any human, so probably would not be an issue. Works well in most updated systems today

Turbulence
True, some clever programming and a fast (but energy consuming) CPU should be able to coop with drafts in such environments. But how about the device's weight and power of its engine(s); It will be blown away without being able to withstand 10m/s winds coming from weird angles. Back to the drawing board, I guess. And, eh, how to avoid the thing from falling apart in high temperatures and serious heat radiation?

Thinking back on the attack....
on the World Trade Center. Small helicopters like these, should have small powerful speakers on them. Telling people in the buildings to " Get the Hell Out"! Its hard to believe, that bosses were telling their employees, to stay at their desk. Which most did, and died. It wouldn't surprise me, that a lot of employees. Said they were going to the restroom, and left the building. When you are under fire, you have to use your head.

World Trade Center.
That is why some employees are smarter than most bosses. Too bad that it is a one way street and it takes a tradgety like the WTC to have it brought to light!
