Can a smart wristband make you healthier?

November 22, 2011  |  Length: 00:04:03

Better known for its Bluetooth headsets, Jawbone is venturing into fitness gadgets with UP, a wristband that tracks your activity level, what you eat, and when you sleep. SmartPlanet's Sumi Das speaks to Jawbone Product Management VP Travis Bogard to find out how it works and gets an answer to a common complaint about the product - why doesn't it transmit data wirelessly?

Jawbone UP - unfounded claim.
Why are unfounded comments such as "Global health is on a rapid decline..." not challenged? Just check the life expectancy stats. Obesity may be on the rise (a separate topic) but in general more people (7 billion at the last count) are living better fed and longer lives across the globe. Lack of rigour is a sign of lazy journalism, allowing contributors to make any claim they like. This, in turn, debases a journalist's report.

Life Expectancy -- Droppinig in Many US Counties and Some Countries.
A substantial number of US counties have shown dropping life expectancies in the past couple of years -- largely it seems in rural and southern areas. Obesity and drug misuse seem to be the culprits, though I'd guess that malnutrition rose during the Bush years, and medical care declined.

Globally nutrition has improved almost everywhere else in the world: the only way to get large-scale starvation now is to have a war. Over the past decade much of Africa has seen life expectancy declines through AIDS, though I'm not up to date on changes over the past year or so. Russia had a sharp decline in life-expectancy when the soviet Union went down, but my uninformed impression is that there has been a partial recovery in the past very few years.

What does life expectancy have to do with health?
So what, people are living longer. That fact doesn't imply health. The golden years could be spent taking pills and getting operated on... It would have been good if the UP rep quoted a study for his claim but...

Global health likely would have been better as.....
American health. There is not a single awake observer of health in America who fails to see that the average American is fatter, and less healthy. To say nothing of stupid. A simple mis-speak on "global" instead of the accurate "American" would fix it. There is a semantic shift in all languages. Global has come to mean "big" or "all encompassing" and is used that way by many under the age of 30. As one comment claimed, people are living longer. Yes, overall that's probably true. What's also true is that their longer life is hardly one any sentient being would desire. The lack of "good health" is the detraction. Alzheimer patients are living longer too. Who wants it?

Jawbone's assertions are timely and important.
