The consolidation of back-end billing systems at the nation's largest telco Telstra is starting to show results, with the telco notifying customers it could now issue them a single bill covering all of their broadband and telephony services.Telstra has since November 2005 been involved in an AU$1 billion transformation of its IT capability under its chief operating officer Greg Winn, including a 75 percent reduction of its business and operational support systems from the previous high of 1,200.

Telstra will be under pressure to ensure it launches its fixed-line SMS service due early next year, as handset suppliers give their equipment a generous head-start to greet the service.It is understood that Telstra's fixed-line division is introducing the new messaging service in an attempt to protect its revenue streams as its rivals in mobile space step-up efforts to lure customers away from conventional land line services.

Companies that give their workers the option of telecommuting are seeing greater productivity, lower costs, improved employee health and greater employee retention, according to a survey released today by the Computing Technology Industry Association.Case in point: I'm typing this from this from my own home office setup - a desk out in a corner of the garage where there's a printer, a phone, some speakers (for my background tunes) and even a small TV with CNN on in the background.
