What you need to know: Pinnacle Bikes Journey 1.0 2008

We like:
The price; wide gearing range; wide adjustability range; accessories included.
We don't like:
It's a bit wobbly; awkward to carry folded; feels cheap in places
SmartPlanet judgement:
For the price, the Journey is pretty much unbeatable. A fairly decent folding bike, with a good range of gears and plenty of useful extras thrown in for free (rack, mudguards, chainguard), the Journey of course also has a few downsides. Most obviously, it's a bit wobbly. But it's awkward to carry folded and a few components and accessories feel cheap and plasticky. These negatives aren't enough to detract from its rock-bottom price, though.

Mezzo d-10
Too costly, particularly compared to its d-9 sibling. But despite that, this is the state-of-the-art for folding bikes -- fast, light, practical.
Puma Glow Rider
The emperor's new bicycle -- all marketing and no trousers. Over-expensive, handles and folds poorly, doesn't glow well enough, and is stealable despite the weird cable-cum-downtube.
Brompton M3L Folding Bike
This British-made folding bike has small wheels but goes for big money -- and is built for practicality
Dahon Jack 2008 Folding Bike
Bigger wheels do mean better speed and stability -- but a bigger, more awkward folded form, too
Fiat 500 1.3 16v Multijet Diesel
This city car has great styling, good economy, and is relatively cheap to buy -- but it's more bouncy than sporty
