What you need to know: Brompton M3L Folding Bike

We like:
The size when folded; steering and stability; ride position; reliable components; it's British-made
We don't like:
Heavier and slower than other folders for the price
SmartPlanet judgement:
The Brompton truly is a British design icon. And rightly so -- despite being solidly unshowy, its practicality wins through. When folded it's easy to carry; folding and unfolding is done in under a minute when practiced; and when unfolded it rides well on potholed roads, weaves through traffic and is comfortable and enjoyable. It's not the fastest folder or lightest, and certainly not for the money. But folding bikes even at their best are not really for speed demons and weight weenies anyway.

Full review:
Say "folding bike" to most people and chances are they'll picture a Brompton. British-made, the Brompton's small wheels have been rolling out of a west London factory since 1981. In over 25 years the company has grown steadily, with orders always outstripping supply. Continue reading...

Pinnacle Journey 1.0 2008
Cheap and cheerful -- the Journey hits the value bullseye. And doesn't end up a horrible compromise in doing so.
Mezzo d-10
Too costly, particularly compared to its d-9 sibling. But despite that, this is the state-of-the-art for folding bikes -- fast, light, practical.
Puma Glow Rider
The emperor's new bicycle -- all marketing and no trousers. Over-expensive, handles and folds poorly, doesn't glow well enough, and is stealable despite the weird cable-cum-downtube.
Dahon Jack 2008 Folding Bike
Bigger wheels do mean better speed and stability -- but a bigger, more awkward folded form, too
Fiat 500 1.3 16v Multijet Diesel
This city car has great styling, good economy, and is relatively cheap to buy -- but it's more bouncy than sporty
