In this green day and age that's seen nuts, balls and tabs used to wash our clothes, this washing powder stands out by being straightforward, practical and functional. We almost get nostalgic using it. Completely ordinary it ain't, though. Made by the pioneer of eco-friendly cleaning products, Ecover, its ingredients are mainly plant and mineral based and it doesn't contain phosphates, which means we'd choose this over a conventional washing powder any time. We also like the discreet Vegan Society logo on its 97 per cent recycled cardboard box.

Ecover's non biological washing powder is the king of all environmentally friendly laundry detergents and a staple in many a green household. There is no difference to be detected between using an ordinary washing powder and Ecover and while we quite like the old-fashioned, trusted format of this washing powder -- in terms of looks and performance -- it intrigues us that a product that's quite boring by nature can be so popular.
