When a company has existed for nearly a century it either means its products are cheap or very good. In Weleda's case it's the latter. Having made body care products from natural, organic and biodynamic ingredients for eighty-odd years, we can't help but admire Weleda and its commitment to being good to its customers as well as to the environment.
This shampoo, the Rosemary and Ginger Shampoo for normal-to-dry hair, is a perfect example of why Weleda has survived for all this time -- even through the 80s and 90s when natural body care was as popular in the mainstream market as George Bush is within the antiwar movement now.
Although we feel the shampoo is too thick and therefore difficult to spread evenly in long hair, there is no doubting that it's a quality product. It cleans our hair perfectly well and leaves it soft and healthy looking. We are big fans of the rosemary and ginger scent, too. If ever you could call a shampoo 'appetising', this would be it. Made with 100 per cent organic plant extracts and no parabens, lauryl or laureth sulphates, artificial colours, fragrances and preservatives, we could almost eat it.
This shampoo is made in Hampshire and while the shampoo doesn't have a Fairtrade or organic certification, we appreciate that many of Weleda's products have the BDIH natural ingredients certification and all of its UK-grown herbs bear the biodynamic certification, Demeter, which we think is well worth supporting. We also generally trust Weleda's commitments to the environment and ethics as it's stood the test of time and consumer scrutiny. So when Weleda says it's committed to using biodynamic and organic ingredients, cutting out synthetic fragrances, artificial preservatives, petrochemicals or GM-ingredients and not testing ingredients or finished products on animals, we believe it.
All this goodness does come at a price. Around £8 for 250ml of shampoo is not cheap and we're thankful we don't have extremely long (or dirty) hair, because we just wouldn't be able to afford it then. However, if you manage to spread it evenly in your hair, a tiny amount will really do the job, so used correctly and carefully, we can see a bottle lasting for a very long time.
All in all, a very good shampoo that's well worth its, er, herbs.
