We realise face creams and gels can be quite personal entities and that not everyone would share our undivided love for Organic Apoteke's Active Face Hydrating Gel. But we do challenge any fan of face products made from organic and natural ingredients not to get addicted to this face gel.
All the ingredients are natural with the majority being certified organic by ECOCERT, which in this case means that the product is 95 to 100 per cent organic. The remaining bits are derived from organic botanicals. The scent is very citrusy, but Organic Apoteke assures us the amount of citrus oils in its products is too small to cause skin irritation.
Most of the the packaging is made from recycled materials and all papers and boxes are printed with vegetable based inks. All the packaging is recyclable.
We're also pretty impressed with the ethical side of Organic Apoteke's face gel. While the products don't sport a Fairtrade mark, Organic Apoteke tells us that the company buys its ingredients mainly from Fairtrade-approved suppliers. Some of the rarer ingredients can only be bought from conventional suppliers, in which case Organic Apoteke always pays Fairtrade Foundation prices. On top of that, Organic Apoteke donates five per cent of its profits every year to the Earth Day Network environmental charity and the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, which campaigns for children's welfare.
Animal lovers will also be happy to hear that all Organic Apoteke's products are Vegetarian Society Approved and Kosher-approved, and that this particular face gel is vegan as well. As part of its no animal testing policy, Organic Apoteke promises never to test on animals or purchase anything from suppliers who have conducted animal testing after 1975.
Amidst all this positivism, let's not pretend looks don't matter. That's one of the reasons we use the stuff after all. We don't mind so much the thin consistency, but we would love it to look less curdled. At the end of the day, lemon juice and milk isn't the most attractive concoction. But that's just us being nitpicky, really.
You might think £22 for 50g of face gel seems dear, but we actually think it's well worth it for all the right reasons.
