STX Europe, builders of some of the world's most well-known cruise ships such as the Queen Mary 2 and the Oasis of the Seas, has embarked on an initiative to create an environmentally friendly cruise ship. The fruit of its labors is the revolutionary Eoseas. Phillip Massaad of SmartPlanet's sister site  CNET Australia  (via ZDNet Australia) takes us on a cruise.

Eoseas was developed as part of STX Europe's Ecohorizon project, which aims to develop practical solutions for constructing more environmentally friendly and sustainable ships. STX Europe is among Europe's largest shipbuilders and has been responsible for building some of the largest cruise ships in service today including the Oasis of the Seas. Eoseas is more than a design, it is a fully functioning blueprint that is awaiting orders from prospective buyers.

Reality?
Actually the idea of using integrated energy (solar, wind, wave) systems (IES) for shipping has been around for quite some time. However, it makes no real sense to employ this design for cruise ships - an industry based entirely on shrinking discretionary incomes. The real payoff comes for specialized freighters that can deliver critical refrigerated and frozen perishables - which now are primarily supplied by air freight - no longer and not likely in the near future to ever be cost effective again .
