Architect Adrian Smith, who directed the building of the current world's tallest building Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is with a new firm, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, and has a new project - build the world's tallest building. The Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, near the Red Sea, is expected to reach a height of over 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) - 173 meters (568 feet) taller than Burj Khalifa - when it is completed in late 2016. The announcement was made by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, nephew of Saudia Arabian King Abdullah and the chairman of the Kingdom Holding Company, who said the construction will begin soon.

The building is expected to cost $1.2 billion and will contain a luxury hotel, office space, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums and the world’s highest observatory.

Re: Haven't they learned anything from 9.11?
And that lesson is that we should all live in fear in our padded underground bunkers? The loss of life was horrible in 9/11, but I am beyond sick and tired of people using that as an excuse why we, either Americans or humans in general, can't strive to create, to push boundaries or simply to be free to live.

I say build it big and tall and glorious. Let's fight the crimes that lead to events like 9/11, but can we please stop using that as an excuse not to try new things?

Tallest Building in the World
I don't know what this has to do with 9/11, except that the country building it was bin Laden's home and is the source of most funds for Al Qaida, at least up to bin Laden's death.

We are seeing our gasoline dollars being used for this ridiculous battle of the tallest buildings. How many tenants can you really have for these buildings?

Why not lower real gasoline prices by crushing the gasoline futures speculators?

U.S. a dupe
Our hard-earned dollars go to build the tallest towers in the world and to fight wars that keep the money flowing in.

Building the worlds tallest building
is like painting a bullseye on Your chest. Somebody is going to prove how "brave" they are and destroy it. If we don't learn from history we won't learn anything ever. What good does provocation do? We don't build any more Challenger shuttles just to "prove" that we can. At least there somebody made a wise choice. Boasting and stupidity often go hand in hand. Like in some of above posts.
