Music Dan Kammen: I'm Dan Kammen, and I'm a professor of energy at the University of California, Berkeley where I also direct both the Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Center for Sustainable Transportation. So, I'm excited about the opportunities on both greening our homes, greening our highways and I work on both sides of that from science to policy. My laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley has been active in a whole number of areas from designing better solar cells to getting involved in efforts to electrify transportation, so we can use plug-in electric vehicles and pure electric vehicles. So, we are involved in kind of both the stationary field side and the mobile side really with the vision to reduce our carbon emissions by dramatic amounts. The opportunities to get much higher mileage and much lower carbon emissions from vehicles that are either fully or partially electric, so-called pure electric or plug-in hybrids look like a dramatic transformation. A plug-in hybrid vehicle in California can get 130 miles to the gallon equivalent today and the ability to use our off peak nuclear, our night time wind energy provides a really unique way to use the green ways we had envisioned in the past. I'm hoping to see a brand new version of house get rolled out in the coming decades whether your home has fuel cell in the basement or solar panels on the roof, a windmill in the backyard or just the big battery that you are able to manage your energy supply as a source of revenue. You are charging your car, you're selling power back to the grid and it's a home designed around this not just a smart grid, but a smart home.
