A British solar car capable of 60mph will take on American rivals next month in a 2,400-mile race. The DUSC2008 is the only UK entry in the American Solar Challenge, a competition to design, build and drive a solar vehicle from Dallas, Texas, to Calgary in Canada.
The car is a single-seater with an average speed of 45mph. It took 100 students from Durham University to design it, and the nine-strong team pictured above will travel to the 13-22 July race.
The DUSC2008's just one of 24 solar cars in the race, which is designed to inspire people to take up science and engineering careers. To check out the other contenders, hit the official American Solar Challenge site.
To the Durham team: good luck! I doubt I'll be the only one chuffed if a team from the grey UK ironically beats the sun-drenched US competition.
