Been foaming at the prospect of seeing the Tesla Roadster electric sports car first-hand? Here's your chance to lust over it in the UK. Tesla's beauty is just one of 20 fully electric vehicles exhibiting at the nation's biggest annual car show, the British Motor Show.
While the London show won't exactly be 'going green' -- no amount of spin removes its reputation for flash performance-packing motors -- it does have some sustainable highlights.
The biggie is the Electric Vehicle Village, which will have the 20 battery-powered vehicles on show. Next to the Tesla will be the G-Wiz, NICE's Mega City, a new brand called Quiet Cars and more.
Show organisers are promising a new electric minivan -- an MPV -- from NICE. They're also teasing us with word of a new "all-electric two-seater." I'd be surprised if it's a truly brand new design; my money's on a production version of the Th!nk or Smart's Ed.
Conventional cars with a low-carbon twist will include Ford's ECOnetic version of the Fiesta. It's a sign of things to come that a car many people drove as their first has now been tweaked for efficiency to drive down its CO2-per-kilometre emissions. If the result is as good as the ECOnetic Focus I reviewed recently, the Fiesta should be a hit.
Final green touches to look out for include eco driving lessons and What Car? Magazine's first-ever green awards.
The show runs 23 July to 3 August at London's Excel. Tickets are a tenner via the official website.
If you can't make it, worry not. The SmartPlanet team will be there in force with a video report so you can see the latest greener cars for yourself.
