2008's Sexy Green Car Show revs up

Ford's Econetic at the Sexy Green Car Show 2008

Channels: Transport News Tags: green cars, event

It's not often you get the chance to see the UK's best green cars in one place, from hybrids and low-CO2 diesels to alternative fuel motors. Especially not against a backdrop as spectacular as the geodesic domes of Cornwall's Eden Project. But that's just what you'll have the chance to do from Friday 23 May at the 2008 Sexy Green Car Show.

Now in its second year running, the show is rammed with everything from SmartPlanet staples such as VW's Bluemotion range to SEAT's Ibiza Ecomotive -- though oddly no Toyota Prius. New and noteworthy cars to look at and stroke include the electric fuel-cell-powered Morgan Life Car, Saab's bio hybrid concept and Ford's economic take on the Focus, the Econetic (pictured). There's a full list of the cars here.

You can also get a green MOT for your own car, plus take the show's simulator to see how you could make your driving style more efficient and planet-friendly. To big up the show, Citroen's done a mini recreation of the Italian Job with its 'Code' luxury twist on the C1, which is already in the UK top five for low-CO2 superminis. Check out the vid below.

I'll be heading down for SmartPlanet in the Econetic, so keep an eye on the site tomorrow for live photos and news [update: these are now live here]. We'll also have a video of the show for you shortly so you can see what all the fuss is about [update: live here]. Plus we'll shortly be running a review of the Econetic, whose fuel needle is sticking irrepressibly to 'full' so far. Oh, and we'll be testing LG's solar-powered bluetooth car kit too. Phew. Watch this space.

The Sexy Green Car Show 2008 runs 23 May to 31 May. Admission's included in the price of a standard Eden Project ticket.

I was planning to come to the Eden Centre to see the green car show. I checked the website to get directions and found a preview - boy, am I ever glad I did. I would have wanted my money back and compensation. If I want to look at a Peugeot 207 I can go to any petrol-smelling dirty city showroom. "Green Cars" my arse. There are loads of genuinely green vehicles out there, a whole new generation of electrics are springing up - despite the best efforts of the mainstream car industry to crush them (literally, in GM's case), there's 100% biofuel cars, agree with them or not they're way less polluting. Eden putting on a show of fossil fuel vehicles is a utter disgrace. Calling it "green" is just a flat-out lie.

@ Michaelovitch -- but the reality is we'll be using petrol and diesel for a good few decades yet while we transition. Why not make the ones we buy more efficient? Electric vehicles are great but we need more electricity generation. Biofuel cars may have lower CO2 emissions but their overall impact on the environment can actually be worse than petrol/diesel (see here: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/data/319/5859/43/DC1/1)

PS -- anon -- I don't think we ever *had* a robust public transport network :-)

It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product

Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off
