During press days for the 2008 New York Auto Show, Mitsubishi drove its electric iMiEV car up and down the hall -- because it could. While gas-powered cars were prohibited from driving in the hall, the iMiEV was allowed to troll by the booths of its automotive competitors.
The iMiEV is an electric version of Mitsubishi's 'i car', a model on sale in Japan with a small gas engine. The car's name includes the model, i, and ends in 'MiEV', the acronym for 'Mitsubishi innovative electric vehicle'.
Mitsubishi's electric vehicle efforts, under the MiEV moniker, first focused on using in-wheel motors, but the Japanese carmaker scrapped that idea in the current version of the iMiEV, which uses one electric motor to power the rear wheels.
The iMiEV has charging ports on both sides to charge up its lithium ion batteries. On a full charge it can go about 100 miles.
Being an electric vehicle, the iMiEV has a simple, one-speed transmission. The spacious interior includes a stereo, air conditioning, navigation, and a digital speedometer.
