Get your distilled eco news today on Nissan's bioethanol trials, the UK delay of Leo's green documentary and the uproar brewing over a new EU organic standard.

Nissan tests petrol-bioethanol car
Japanese motor maker Nissan is having a crack at sugar-based biofuels. A trial starts this April of Japan's first car (pictured) running on a ten per cent bioethanol, 90 per cent petrol mix called E10. According to Science's handy biofuel chart, bioethanol produces less than 40 per cent of the carbon emissions of petrol, but has a worse total environmental impact. So, good news and bad news. How about some nice new hybrids, Japan?

11th Hour delayed til March
The release of Leonardo DiCaprio's eco documentary, which was panned in the US, has been delayed over here. 11th Hour was due to debut in UK cinemas this February but is now expected to get a March release date. SmartPlanet was lucky enough to watch a screener of the film being billed as the heir to An Inconvenient Truth on Tuesday, so expect our first thoughts soon.

Bangladeshi factory campaigner released
Sweatshop action group Labour Behind The Label is reporting on the release of Mehedi Hasan, a Bangladeshi activist who campaigned for workers' rights. The NGO warns that other campaigners working for better wages and working conditions are being targeted by the Bangladeshi government.

Meaningless generic EU-Organic labels...
Organic supremos at the Soil Association are up in arms at proposals for a new EU-wide organic standard. Sir Peter Melchett, the association's policy director, says: "Imposing a meaningless, generic 'EU-Organic' label will put the [European] Commission into conflict with those who could be its strongest supporters. Consumers want to buy locally sourced organic sausages supporting Norfolk, Cumberland, or Schleswig-Holstein producers, not some anonymous 'Euro-organic sausage'."
