Recycling Tube papers raises £50k for charity

We've written before about the nine-and-a-half tonnes of newspapers collected every day on just three tube lines, but what we didn't know is that the money saved by recycling these papers is going into a charitable fund.

The Tube Lines Community Support Fund uses this money to support good causes, and has donated £51,159 since it was established in February 2007. Most of this money goes to things like sponsoring employees undertaking charity events for organisations like Leukaemia Care, Macmillan Cancer Support, NSPCC, local Scout groups, British Heart Foundation, Alzheimer's Society, Marie Curie Cancer and the Railway Children.

One employee, Galvin Silvey, cycled from London to Paris to support the Meningitis Trust, and received some help from the fund.

"I applied for Tube Lines' support and they agreed to donate £300 towards my target, which was a terrific help. Friends of mine lost their young son to the disease a few years ago. This was an opportunity for me to do something," says Silvey.

While we think it's a terrible waste that these papers are tossed after 30 seconds of half-interested attention, we're happy to hear that the saved money is going to a good cause.
