This month the Toyota Prius celebrates its 10th birthday -- even though, to us, it seems strange that such a thoroughly modern car can be that old. Launched in Japan in 1997, the car came to the UK three years later in 2000.
It's sold 16,000 here alone, with 81,000 going to Europe as a whole. Much of the popularity in the UK can be attributed to the fact that it is exempt from the daily £8 London congestion charge. Worldwide, in the ten years since launch, Toyota has sold a staggering 900,000 Priuses.
Sure, it might not technically be the most economical car out there, but it's revolutionary in that it was the first hybrid to break into the mainstream. It also delivers its 65.7mpg in comfort, so you don't have to trade convenience and space for lower emissions.
People like them, and owners love them -- in the 2007 J.D. Power and Associates UK Customer Satisfaction Survey, the Prius was ranked number one.
If only all cars could be that satisfying to own, and that green, too. We're looking forward to seeing what Toyota can do with the Prius in the next ten years.
