Sustainable transport charity Sustrans has won a £50 million grant from the People's Lottery Giveaway. The competition saw six charities fighting for the public's vote to win the huge sum in a bizarre reality-TV style show.
Through its Connect2 project, Sustrans plans to spend the money on developing walking and cycling paths for 79 local communities all over the UK. Personally, this was one of our favourite schemes in the competition -- we just hope that they find some spare cash to fill in the pot-holes on our commuting route, too.
The success is, in part, due to the charity's use of Facebook. Sustrans set up a Facebook group to promote their cause, which attracted over 1,000 members. In typical Facebook fashion, Sustran's celebrations on their profile page are slightly more informal than the official announcement.
"This really is an amazing achievement for our charity and the many local authority and other partners with whom we will work on Connect2. We simply couldn't have done it without you and your votes," says Sustrans founder, John Grimshaw MBE (pictured above, on the right).
