If you own a lithium-ion-powered iPod, mobile and camera, you may scoff at getting your hands grubby with old-fashioned AA batteries -- but I bet you still have an old gadget or bike light somewhere that uses them. If you haven't already switched to rechargeables AAs, now's a good time. Uniross has just unveiled a bunch of new WWF-backed rechargeable batteries and chargers, and rival battery maker USBCell is warning that the UK's in the firing line for EU landfill fines if we don't buck up our battery recycling by 2012.
Uniross' chargers don't do anything revolutionary, but they do come in recycled card packaging and you can help the WWF by buying them direct from the environmental charity's online shop. There are 14 different types of battery and 16 different chargers, and you can buy a selection from the WWF -- including a basic 4 x AA/AAA charger for £15.
If the WWF's claim that rechargeables have "32 times less environmental impact than disposables" doesn't inspire you, try this for size. I estimate by using rechargeables you'll have to make 32 fewer late night supermarket trips due to dead batteries.
