Fuel-efficiency devices in vehicles are nothing new -- our old Toyota had a green light that lit up when we were driving efficiently and a yellow one for when we weren't. But sophisticated satellite systems that transfer our driving data to the internets is indeed a brand new thing.
Carbon neutral insurance company MORE TH>N has just launched the Green Wheel system, which will show you how green your driving really is -- with the aim of changing your driving style if you're not on the green bandwagon, so to speak. If you do start braking, speeding and changing gears more efficiently, it could save you both petrol money and CO2.
The idea is relatively simple. MORE TH>N's partner, Airmax, will fit your car with a 'Green Box', which works similarly to a GPS system. It monitors your driving style and reports data back via a builti-in mobile phone radio to MORE TH>N's new website.
There you'll have your own account with personalised driving reports that you can check out to see how efficient you've been and what you can do to save more fuel -- and cut down on your carbon footprint. You can also check out other Green Wheel drivers' eco-driving performance on the site and get feedback if you fancy it. It's one thing to be told by your partner how to drive -- it annoys the pants off anyone -- but quite another to be advised by a well-meaning website.
In order to use the system you must take out a policy with MORE TH>N Green Wheels Insurance, and policy customers will need to check if their car is compatible by calling 0800 975 3572 for an insurance quote.
