Solar engineers are in big demand as the industry grows. So to address the global skills gap, a university in Berlin has started offering a Masters degree in solar engineering taught in English.
This course from the Technical University of Berlin, called Global Production Engineering for Solar Technology (GPE Solar), covers engineering, business development skills and management training. It covers both photovoltaic and thermal solar power is organised jointly with the Renewables Academy of Berlin (site in German).
Germany is one of the world's leaders in solar use and design and courses like these are necessary -- this one is specifically designed to prepare students for the particular needs of the fast-growing solar-technology market. It's also a refreshing alternative to the UK's push to train more nuclear engineers.
Renewable energy is experiencing a surge of interest worldwide and solar energy is the strongest performer of the lot, according Swiss Bank Sarasin, which is heavily involved in renewable energy investment. It says that the global photovoltaic industry grew by more than 40 per cent in 2007, and expects the market to grow between 40 and 50 per cent in 2008. Its November 2007 report on solar energy expects that the market will grow by 50 per cent for the rest of the decade and by 2018, produce cheaper electricity than conventional sources.
