Are black websites greener than white ones?

Charles and Rupert on ZDNet.co.uk's Dialogue Box
Tech News
Channels: Tech News Tags: computer monitors, energy efficiency

The men in white coats have come to help us answer a long-standing green IT question: are black websites really greener than white ones?

The latest edition of video series Dialogue Box from our sister site, ZDNet.co.uk, investigates the dilemma. With their handy digital multimeter to measure wattage, Charles and Rupert compare the energy consumption of a white site like Google to a black site like CNET TV.

But there's more to it than that. They pulled an old cathode ray tube computer monitor out of the basement and tried it next to the snazzy modern LCD monitors most of us use today. With different technology, as you might guess, the amount of power consumed and the way it's consumed is quite different.

Meaning that the answer to the green website question is not exactly black and white. Check out the Dialogue Box video to see what Charles and Rupert uncovered.

It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off

This British-made folding bike has small wheels but goes for big money -- and is built for practicality

You won't find a better TV for picture in its class, but you will find ones with superior green credentials
