The first thing most people do when they get their new iPod home is throw away the moulded plastic case it came in, sending it straight to a landfill site where it will sit for the next few thousand years. So you can imagine our delight when we came across Japanese company Bird-Electron's (website in Japanese) EZ17-B iPod recycling speaker.
It's a gadget that saves the little lump of iPod plastic and turns it into a useful set of external speakers. If you've ever seen Apple's cases for its famed gadgets -- and we're pretty sure most of you have -- then you'll know how good the quality is.
In the recycled speaker, a small plastic panel with two tiny speakers drops on top of the original open plastic container, which amplifies the sound iPods produce. In addition to being made from recycled material, the speaker requires no external power and no batteries either.
The best part is that the container also acts as a carrying case for the speaker set, safely holding the speakers and cable. And its own packaging is made from biodegradable materials.
You can pick one of the EZ17-B speakers online for £19, which is cheaper than many speaker sets, greener and far more unusual and interesting.
