Voltaic Generator: now solar bags can charge laptops too

Voltaic Generator solar bag

Finally -- after years of solar bags capable of charging small gadgets like iPods and mobile phones, a company has developed one able to power laptops.

Launched at annual gadget-fest show CES, the Voltaic Systems Generator has boosted the number of watts it's capable of outputting, meaning it can power-up a laptop. Older bags from Voltaic and rivals such as Reware and Eclipse Solar Gear have suffered from only being able to output less than 10W. The Generator, by contrast, can do 14.7W -- enough to charge a standard laptop.

The bag goes on sale later this spring and should set you back £300. Even with the bonus of a weak dollar, that's still a lot of cash to splash for a solar bag -- most existing ones have come in between £100 and £150.

Like Voltaic's recent addition of bags made from recycled plastic bottles, this one comes supplied with a bunch of adaptors including ones for USB, car chargers and major mobile phone brands so you can plug in your kit.

Watch this space -- we'll get our hands on a Generator as soon as possible. If it's anywhere near as good as the recycled slimline Conveter bag we're testing at the moment, it should be a corker.
