Balls predicts carbon-neutral schools by 2016

Schools are set to go carbon neutral as early as 2016

Schools are set to go carbon neutral as early as 2016, according to schools secretary, Ed Balls. He announced that many school buildings will have solar panels and wind turbines installed in order to become self-sustaining in their energy requirements.

200 projects will be undertaken in the next three years, which will cost a total of £110 million. This means that the typical school in the plan will receive around £500,000 to install sustainable generators and make buildings more efficient.

This could include everything from the use of energy-efficient computers and electronic devices, to improving existing insulation and using bio-mass burners to provide heat.

"We are taking action now to reduce carbon emissions in new school buildings while we work towards the zero-carbon goal," Balls told The Guardian. We wonder, do the new plans include banning 4x4s -- or any cars, in fact -- on the school run, too?

Pinnacle Journey 1.0 2008
Cheap and cheerful -- the Journey hits the value bullseye. And doesn't end up a horrible compromise in doing so.
Mezzo d-10
Too costly, particularly compared to its d-9 sibling. But despite that, this is the state-of-the-art for folding bikes -- fast, light, practical.
Puma Glow Rider
The emperor's new bicycle -- all marketing and no trousers. Over-expensive, handles and folds poorly, doesn't glow well enough, and is stealable despite the weird cable-cum-downtube.
Weleda Edelweiss Sun Lotion SPF 15
It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off
