It's Earth Day today -- all about making an extra effort to do your bit for a greener planet and telling other people about it, too. Whether you're the outgoing kind or the indoor type, you'll be sure to find something you can be part of to show your (green) colours today. We've picked our three favourites.
Get out and be political
Tonight there's a great opportunity for Londoners who fancy getting off their sofas to participate actively in the debate about The Big Climate Change Law. Friends of the Earth and Stop Climate Chaos are campaigning for a law that covers all the UK's emissions -- including those from international flights and shipping. The law would commit Britain to cut its massive carbon footprint by 80 per cent by 2050.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn, Liberal Democrat Peter Ainsworth, Conservative Party Steve Webb and all the mayoral candidates will be at Friends House in London, prepared to listen to what we think about the proposal and to discuss the government's preparation for the new Climate Change Law in general.
Tony Juniper, director of Friends of the Earth -- and SmartPlanet board member -- says: "This meeting is a must for anyone who is interested in change and what the government is doing to tackle it. It is the last chance for people to quiz top politicians on the new Climate Change Law before it is introduced this summer."
...Or do your bit in front of your computer
Don't think you can't do anything if you're not in London, or even if you prefer to stay at home. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the green world and spread your Earth Day messages online.
Today a new charity called Healthy Planet celebrates Earth Day by launching its website, www.healthyplanet.org. It's designed to make it easy for both individuals and businesses to look after protected areas on the planet by encouraging people to sponsor a piece of land and check up on it using new Google technology. Besides monitoring the piece of land they've adopted online, sponsors -- or Land Guardians -- will also be part of a forum where they can keep up to date on what's happening on 'their' land and other Healthy Planet projects.
We're liking Healthy Planet's new site and how it's made it easy for us to be green armchair revolutionaries. There are different sponsor options, but adopting one square kilometre of a protected area -- about the size of 140 football pitches -- costs around £45 per year. If you've got a lot of dosh you can also protect a plot of land forever for £2,225.
And the armchair revolution continues…
Famous American football player, Tiki Barber, is heading up another easy Earth Day campaign to help the American conservation charity, National Forest Foundation.
The idea is simple, especially if you're already a member of community site StumbleUpon. Basically, you just go to www.stumbleupon.com/earthday, click 'Thumbs-up' and voila, the site will donate money to the National Forest Foundation to plant a tree.
And of course, you can always comment on our Earth Day stories, too.
