Controversial artist Damien Hirst is to install a solar panel so large in his Gloucestershire studio that it will become the country's second largest photovoltaic system and will account for two per cent of the UK's solar power.
The panels, which haven't been built yet, will cover the roof of all three warehouses that make up his studio -- meaning that he'll need a massive 1,800 sq. metres of cells. This should bring the capacity up to 310 kilowatts, presumably more than enough to run even the most energy-intensive studio.
Perhaps Hirst could flog the excess power back to the National Grid and donate the profit to charities building more green power plants? That would be a nice touch, especially since Britain is lagging behind other European countries in creating solar power sources. Germany, for instance, has 200 times as much peak capacity as the UK.
According to the Guardian, Hirst's installation will cost the extremely successful British artist £1.5 million. This shouldn't be a problem, though, as the typical Hirst piece now sells for at least that much. And besides, his overheads are low -- formaldehyde and dead animals.
