This year's Isle of Man TT races just ended, but be cheered, there are only 334 days until next year's. If that doesn't get your blood pumping then maybe this will: 2009's races will have something for us eco speed-lovers, too, with the TTxGP, the world's first "clean emission grand prix".
TTxGP aims to "set the benchmark in environmentally friendly racing excellence." This means that in the 2009 event, alongside the usual motorcycling mayhem, there'll be a race for zero-emissions vehicles, too.
This is a little bit like the 2,400-mile Solar Challenge, except that it's also the exact opposite. In the Solar Challenge, speeds will reach just 45mph. At the TTxGP, the organisers are planning to prove that green doesn't mean slow -- the Vectrix superbike, pictured above, goes 125mph on a 240-volt battery and could grace the course next year. Other forms of green transport technology are welcome, too -- not just electrics.
Open to vehicles with two or three wheels, the event is still in its early planning stages but it's hoped that racing teams will come together with universities, clean energy specialists and big corporations for the grand prix and show off their green technologies. Independent teams can also take part -- using off-the-shelf power supplies and a fixed budget they can see how fast they can get their own vehicles around the Isle of Man TT course.
