Ever wondered what the Angel of the North would look like if it was made from old Coke cans? No, none of the SmartPlanet team had either, but I still think this recycled sculpture by artist Sam McGeever (pictured) is pretty cool. It's one of a series of four sculptures of regional icons made from old Coke cans to celebrate Recycle Week, starting today.

Wondering why they're made from Coke cans rather than old Whole Earth organic lemonade cans? That'd be because the sculptures were commissioned by Coca-Cola. Shameless PR stunt? Yes. Likely to make people recycle more? Probably not.

Still, I grudgingly admit the sculptures themselves are cool pieces of art. Click on for some great pics of a recycled Big Ben, Clifton Suspension Bridge and Birmingham Bull.

"Shameless PR stunt? Yes. Likely to make people recycle more? Probably not."

You're a miserable cynic ;-). Aluminium cans are aluminium cans, and they recycle just the same whether they contained Coke or Whole Earth lemonade. It's a stunt, and stunts are shameless by definition, but I think the sculptures are very cool. Maybe they'll make people think about creative uses for the junk that's cluttering up their homes, and maybe they'll just make them smile, but either is fine by me.

Also, I didn't know it was Recycle Week, and now I do, so the stunt worked...

Pinnacle Journey 1.0 2008
Cheap and cheerful -- the Journey hits the value bullseye. And doesn't end up a horrible compromise in doing so.
Mezzo d-10
Too costly, particularly compared to its d-9 sibling. But despite that, this is the state-of-the-art for folding bikes -- fast, light, practical.
Puma Glow Rider
The emperor's new bicycle -- all marketing and no trousers. Over-expensive, handles and folds poorly, doesn't glow well enough, and is stealable despite the weird cable-cum-downtube.
Weleda Edelweiss Sun Lotion SPF 15
It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off
