If you're planning a day out tomorrow, why not pop by The Greenshop in Stroud to check out its new, super-green building? Also read up on the organic alternative to the Femmecup, fair trade kids' things and eco fashion designers in the making.
Make Your Mark in Fashion finalists announced
The fashion companies behind the Make Your Mark in Fashion competition -- Ciel, Enamore, From Somewhere, Junky Styling, Juste, Liv, Makepiece, Terra Plana and The Hemp Trading Company (THTC) -- have now announced the three finalists. Berrie, Miawi and R.A.J.E. have won the chance to be mentored by one of these successful eco designers and to show off their collections on the catwalk at London Fashion Week in September. We can't wait to see Berrie's burlesque-inspired Fairtrade clothes, Miawi's upcycled outfits with an African twist and R.A.J.E.'s Japanese- and British-style designs made for any female body type.
Open house at The Greenshop
One of the first UK eco product retailers, The Greenshop (above), has just moved into its new uber-green headquarters. It's inviting everybody to come and have a look tomorrow, to learn a bit about the way it's been built. Based in Gloucestershire, The Greenshop's new building is designed by eco architecture firm, Architype, and boasts sustainable features such as biomass and solar thermal heating, solar panels on the roof, green and brown roofs, a rainwater harvesting system, natural insulation from Thermafleece and Warmcel, an interior decorated with natural paints and finishes, natural lighting and ventilation solutions and (whew!) flooring made from oak, bamboo and recycled tyre carpets. Sounds to us like it'll make for a very inspiring day out.
New organic pads from Natracare
While the Femmecup seems to be the top in green menstrual protection, we acknowledge it might not be every lady's cup of tea. But there's no reason to compromise your eco ideals too much for that one week a month, girls. Organic hygiene brand Natracare has just launched two new products, the Natracare Ultra long pads with wings and Super+ pads without wings. Like all Natracare's products they're made from certified organic cotton and don't contain petroleum-derived absorbent gels or chlorine.
Fun fair trade stuff for kids
Fair trade online retailer Namaste has just got a new range of children's clothes, accessories and play-room things in store. All the products are brightly coloured and most of them are made from recycled or sustainable materials. One of our favourites is the multi-patched quilted bedcover made from recycled fabric. It's made in India by a fair trade co-operative, which supports a rural school in Rajasthan. The bedcovers retail at £50.
