In brief: cardboard cradles, electric EcoBins and sustainable seagulls

EcoCentric's sustainable wooden seagull

Channels: Leisure News, Household News Tags: recycled, waste, conservation

From toxic-free nights for children to sustainable wooden seagulls -- we've got some unusual news for you today. Read on to find out about electric bins and tree-saving printer companies, too.

Sustainable (wooden) seagull
The latest addition to EcoCentric's green product range is the seagull mobile (above). It's hand-carved in the UK from solid English ash from sustainably managed forests and it costs £90. Some might wonder, why a sustainable seagull? We don't really know, but there's just something special about it.

Sovereign EcoBin will manage your waste
Waste is a troublesome thing, but now kitchen appliance company Sovereign has created the EcoBin, which is a dishwasher look-alike bin with compartments for food, plastic, metal and paper. It grounds food and compacts cans and plastic bottles and thereby reduces the amount of waste that needs to be collected by the council. This of course is a good thing, but the whole machine -- which the bin essentially is -- seems quite excessive for an ordinary household. It might work well in offices and larger kitchens, though. It's worth noting that is does consume 0.4 kilowatts every 24 hours for managing your waste.

Luma launches children's bed linen
Organic and ethical linen retailer, Luma, has just made it less boring for the little ones to sleep in organic sheets. Its new children's bed linen ranges are designed with 'Bugs and Leaves' or 'Flutters and Flowers' embroideries and appliques and are just the cutest. Prices start at £12 for a pillowcase.

Cardboard cradle
Sticking with children, ECOutlet has just started selling the Eco Cradle, which is made from 60 per cent recycled cardboard. Like the cardboard shelves we've reviewed, it's eco-friendly since it can be recycled, and is lightweight -- it packs flat, so doesn't take up as much room in transport, and therefore causes fewer CO2 emissions. It's also supposed to be completely non-toxic and comes with a European safety standard certificate.

Give us a big green smile
A new online retailer, Big Green Smile, has just joined the likes of Nigel's Ecostore, EcoCentric, Ethical Superstore and ECOutlet to offer us green product junkies the latest fun stuff that's been produced with the planet and people in mind. Big Green Smile also boasts a section of tips on how to save water, energy and other resources, which we quite like.

Lexmark extends Earth Day
Green gestures shouldn't be limited to Earth Day, and the Lexmark printer company has shown it agrees by making a green effort throughout April. Besides giving a 50 per cent discount on its paper-saving duplex printers, it's also decided to sponsor the protection of 242 hectares of rainforest through the Rainforest Foundation.
