Today is all about fighting climate change -- whether it be by US governors, searching the internet or planting trees.
US Governors talk Climate Change
Arnold Schwarzenegger is joining governors from across the United States to fight climate change. They meet at Yale University today, 100 years after President Theodore Roosevelt's landmark Conference of Governors took place, to discuss the effects of climate change on a global level and to develop strategies for positive action in the future. This is a meeting of minds that will affect us all, regardless of geographical location.
Out with the old, in with the new
It's spring cleaning time at How on Earth. The online retailer is having a bit of a clear-out to make room for some new stock, which means two things: special offers and brand new ranges to snap up. There's some lovely stuff for us to smother ourselves in and in typical How on Earth style, the store has done its homework, sourcing natural and organic products that are kind to us and the planet. Look out for the Suki colour range (100 per cent natural and cruelty-free); Pai organic skincare (handmade in the UK with Soil Association certification); and Trilogy skincare from New Zealand (not only are they natural but carbon neutral too).
Brits are green, not mean
It seems we British folk are quite happy to splash our dosh around to help save the world. According to a recent study by Cahoot, around 40 per cent of us are willing to pay ten per cent more for the good green stuff in order to help the environment. Women seem to have bigger (greener) hearts than men, with 69 per cent of females making a conscious effort to purchase the more environmentally friendly option (compared to 58 per cent of males). As a nation though, we're a rather caring lot, with 64 per cent of us regularly buying planet-friendly products. It appears the rise of ethical consumerism is costing us, not the earth.
Search the web: save the planet
Now we can plant trees at the click of our mouse. A new 'ecological' internet search engine, ecocho.co.uk, launched in the UK and across 14 countries this week and promises to plant two trees for every 1,000 searches made with them. It's powered by Google and Yahoo so it's still nice and familiar and from the trial searches we did here at SmartPlanet, it's just as fast and works in exactly the same way. It's free and easy to swap to ecocho.co.uk and if it helps offset the planet's carbon emissions, why not lift a finger and help the environment?
A tree-son to party
The green-fingered people at Trees for Cities are celebrating the charity's 15th birthday this year and the planting of their 100,000th tree. Originally, the charity started (as Trees for London) in 1993, funding tree planting in Brixton by throwing huge underground parties. Naturally, it makes sense to throw an all-nighter back where it all started, make everyone dress up in a 'green' theme and raise some cash for a good cause. If you're up for it, The Dex Club Brixton will play host and tickets are £10 in advance via the website.
