From Earth Day and vegan shoes to Co-op water and FSC forests, we've got the latest green happenings in today's News in Brief.
Hot vegan footing it our way
Vegan footwear isn't the easiest thing to find on the high street but those ethically minded people at online boutique Bourgeois Boheme have brought shopping with a conscience to our doorstep. Check out their range of stylish vegan shoes and accessories for men and women, at the opening of their new London store in Richmond, from Saturday, 17 May.
Can you Froggybank on it?
The new online shopping portal Froggybank launched yesterday. It works pretty much like any other cashback site out there (like smartlygreen.co.uk, for instance), by offering customers the choice of offsetting carbon emissions, donating to charity or pocketing the money themselves. The company proposes to help UK shoppers offset 1 million tonnes of carbon by 2012. Of course, that depends on the generosity of us Brits.
From innocent trees big trees grow
The people at 'innocent drinks' may just be as lovely as their smoothies. The company's tree campaign was such a huge success last year that it's going to plant some more all over again. So for every innocent smoothie we buy and register online, innocent will plant a tree in India. Simple stuff.
Earth Day
Timberland will be getting down and dirty for its10th Annual World Earth Day on 22 April. Employees across the globe will be putting their boots on and digging in to help green up and clean up living and working areas all over the world. If you'd like to help (green fingers not essential) then join Timberland's UK effort at Langley Park and Black Park in Buckinghamshire.
FSC forests
If you are trying to do your bit for the environment, buying FSC-approved products is probably up there on your green to-do list. The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) has done such a good job of responsibly managing the world's forests that the area of forest certified to them exceeded 100 million hectares last month. The scheme runs over 79 countries and implements strict standards, ultimately enabling consumers to make well-informed greener choices when shopping. Well done FSC.
The Water Pledge
We all know water is good for us but now we can actually do some good by drinking it with the help of The Co-operative. They've launched an initiative to encourage us to drink ethical mineral water over regular alternatives. Pledge your promise online and with every purchase of The Co-op's own Fairbourne brand they'll donate a percentage to The One Foundation, the charitable arm of One Water, to help fund the installation of PlayPump water systems in villages in South Africa.
