Valentine pressies: more than just 'I love you'

While the idea of pink (toxic) plastic hearts and humongous amounts of trees becoming naff "I love you" cards makes us want to ban Valentine's Day forever, we are hopeless romantics deep down. In the end, we really wouldn't mind being told we're loved, as long as it's done with consideration for the planet and people, too.

We've picked our Valentine's favourites by price, so there's a little something for everyone -- for those of you who just want to show your loved one you haven't forgotten it's Valentine's Day and for those of you who want to go a bit wild…

Under £5
What is it: Montezuma's Little Bag of Love with organic milk and white chocolate hearts
Loved by your Valentine and the environment because: the chocolate is 100 per cent organic and animal-friendly as it's available in a vegan version, too
How much: £3.75
Available at: Montezuma shops and online

£6-20:
What is it: Ellie Poo handmade paper Valentine card that comes with an Ellie Poo planter and rose seeds -- perfect for your no-nonsense, waste-hating Valentine, who deep down does want a card, as long as it does more than say "I love you"
Loved by your Valentine, the environment and people because: it's 100 per cent recycled (and contains some elephant dung -- hence the name) and has been made under fair trade conditions
How much: £15
Available at: Ellie Poo's online shop

£21 - £30
What is it: Katharine Hamnett's "Without LOVE we're nothing" t-shirt for men and women -- a useful and cool way of getting your message across to your Valentine
Loved by your Valentine, the environment and people because: it's made from 100 per cent organic cotton and printed with water-based, eco-friendly prints; and the people who sewed the shirts in India have been paid fairly
How much: £28 (they're on sale)
Available at: Katharine Hamnett's online store

£31 - £40
What is it: Beyond Organic Skin Care's Valentine Gift Pack, which includes day cream, hydrating body oil and organic eye cream -- a nice way to say "I love you and you deserve being pampered"
Loved by your Valentine and the environment because: it's certified biodynamic and it's free from GM, petrochemicals and parabens
How much:
£31.68
Available at: Beyond Organic Skin Care's online shop

£41-50
What is it: Daylesford's stylish, organic hamper with savoury parmesan biscuits, a box of chocolate truffles and a glass of pink bubbly -- which would make a night in oh-so-romantic
Loved by your Valentine and the environment because: all the products are organic
How much: £49.95
Available at: Daylesford stores and online

£51 - £150
What is it: a three-course dinner for two with wine at Acorn House, Konstam at Prince Albert or The Duke of Cambridge -- a classic for a reason, as nothing's more romantic than a (sustainable) candle-lit dinner with your Valentine
Loved by your Valentine and the environment because: all three restaurants serve local and/or organic, seasonal food
How much: £50 - £100
Available at: Acorn House, 69 Swinton Street, London WC1X 9NT; Konstam at Prince Albert, 2 Acton Street, London, WC1X 9NA; The Duke of Cambridge, 30 St Peter's Street, London N1 8 JT

£151 - £200
What is it: a tree planted by Trees for Cities on your behalf with a plaque carrying your personalised message, which could be you and your love's names -- it's just a suggestion, remember
Loved by your Valentine and the environment because: trees soak up CO2 and everybody loves the look of them
How much: £175
Available at: Trees for Cities online shop

Over £201
What is it: Fifi Bijoux Ardent Pendant 9 Carat Gold for the woman in your life -- what more can we say?
Loved by your Valentine and the miners because: the gold and gem are ethically sourced from eco-friendly mines
How much: £205
Available at: Adili.com

Happy Valentine's Day!

I went to get some of those Montezuma chocolates yesterday but it's a tiny amount for the price and you can get some Tasty Turtles for £1.60 instead. They're more fun than hearts anyway and you get get two bags and still feel like you're saving money.

I recommend Konstam too - it's lovely, if bizarrely decorated.

Weleda Edelweiss Sun Lotion SPF 15
It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off
Brompton M3L Folding Bike
This British-made folding bike has small wheels but goes for big money -- and is built for practicality
Dahon Jack 2008 Folding Bike
Bigger wheels do mean better speed and stability -- but a bigger, more awkward folded form, too
Sony Bravia KDL-32V2000
You won't find a better TV for picture in its class, but you will find ones with superior green credentials
