Planet Earth returns as a DVD board game

The Planet Earth DVD board game

We were glued to the TV every Sunday when Planet Earth was on BBC1, and we regularly watch it back on DVD, too. The amazing shots, which took five years to film, kept millions of UK viewers tuning in for weeks. Now there's an interactive board game based on the series to keep us entertained -- let's hope that it is worthy of the association with the series.

The BBC certainly sounds suitably pleased with the results. "Planet Earth is our leading natural history property. The game developed by Imagination looks good, and we anticipate a successful partnership," says Anna Hewitt, head of licensing for BBC Worldwide.

The game is split into categories, including pole to pole, fresh water/ice worlds, shallow seas/ocean deep, deserts/great plains, seasonal forests/jungles and caves/mountains.

"This is the first truly co-operative DVD game, where friends and families can learn all about our amazing planet and work together to answer a range of trivia questions based on footage from the show," says Imagination's UK commercial director, Steve Reece.

"By joining forces with BBC Worldwide for Planet Earth, we can help raise awareness about life on our planet while also delivering the latest game play experience to consumers, with a brand that is proven to sell."

The DVD is available to order now from retailers like Amazon, for £29.99, and can be played with between two and four people. Just a shame it uses electricity to play it...

I would like to purchase this game for my nephew; however, I am concerned that it may include scenes of animals killing and eating other animals. While I realize this is a part of nature, I feel it may be too graphic and difficult for an 8 year old to see - especially my animal-loving, very sensitive nephew. Can anyone please let me know if such scenes are included? Thanks.

Just bought this game for Christmas. Good concept, however, the game will not advance past the same question. Disappointing for our family.

I just purchased the game for my grandson and we too can not get past the sea snake question. Since there is no address on the box, shouldn't you help us fix this problem?

Hi all. I've asked the game's designers and am still waiting back for an answer. I'll nag them and come back to you when I've got an answer. Thanks.

Morning. Imagination Games got back to me today and Amber there says that if the game isn't advancing beyond a question (presumably this sea snake one?) then it's a disc fault. To get your disc fixed, just send an email to Amber Scotford at amber.scotford@imaginationgames.com

I just received the game as a gift because I love the planet earth series. My family also found that the dvd is stuck on the sea snake question. This was a major dissappointment.

We played the game for the first time last night. We don't have a TV, so we used the computer and the VLC player: same result, the game was stuck at the sea snakes question!
We managed to play it using the Windows Media Player but there was no sound in there (the questions worked perfect though!).

Anyway, Evrika!, we found the solution later in the night: we installed the KMPlayer (found it looking for reviews for others players: http://www.download.com/The-KMPlayer/3000-13632_4-10659939.html) and YES, everything is perfect! Looking forward for this evening.

Hope yours will work fine too.

Shelly, he eight years old. First of all the game is nice and there are no scenes like that - nothing inappropriate. Second, he's eight years old. Don't baby him! That's the worst thing you can do. He's not a baby anymore. I know that certain things are too harsh for young children but nature and wildlife and animals eating other animals is alright for an eight year old and is part of life. You eat meat so I'm curious that he has not asked about that yet. You need to let him grow up.

Pinnacle Journey 1.0 2008
Cheap and cheerful -- the Journey hits the value bullseye. And doesn't end up a horrible compromise in doing so.
Mezzo d-10
Too costly, particularly compared to its d-9 sibling. But despite that, this is the state-of-the-art for folding bikes -- fast, light, practical.
Puma Glow Rider
The emperor's new bicycle -- all marketing and no trousers. Over-expensive, handles and folds poorly, doesn't glow well enough, and is stealable despite the weird cable-cum-downtube.
Weleda Edelweiss Sun Lotion SPF 15
It's a very good, honest sun lotion and we appreciate that -- we're excited about Weleda as a company, but not overly so about this particular product
LG 32LG5000
Stylish and with good performance, this is a nice TV, especially at just over £400 -- but the high energy use is a turn off
