Exotic Paper Co rears elephant poo planters

Elephant dung and recycled paper make up this unusual planter

While a box of elephant poo may not seem like the sort of thing you want sitting on your windowsill (especially on a hot day), if you have some patience then this one will sprout you your very own banana plant.

The poo planter comes from the Exotic Paper Company, which we have covered before for their poo-derived paper. The company, based in Somerset, offers the planters in a range of options (both poo and seed), which let you tailor the exact planter you want.

Although they're not Fairtrade, the company is a member of the British Association for Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS) and they donate money to Save the Rhino International for every sale of Rhino dung paper.

Essentially it is a box made of recycled card, filled with poo for fertiliser and spattered with seeds. You can choose from elephant, rhino or reindeer poo, and banana, mimosa, ornamental grass or rose seeds. You can even grow a Christmas tree, which should be a respectable height by next Christmas if you start soon.

Full after-care instructions are included on the label, so no green thumb or gardening knowledge is needed. Besides, with fertiliser like that the plants are bound to do well.

The company also makes a range of A5 journals, notebooks, sketch pads and t-shirts, as well as 100 per cent recycled paper from a range of odd sources like grass clippings, confetti and tea.

All these, and the planters, can be bought online at the Exotic Paper Company's website. The planters are £4 each, which is a small price to pay for brightening up your windowsill. They shouldn't smell too bad, either. Honest.
